What is Coaching?
Coaching is the process of helping people to perform at the peak of their abilities so that they are empowered to realise their potential through taking specific actions towards positive, lasting change and sustained improvements. Coaching is client-centred, goal driven and action oriented. It is a structured collaboration between the coach and the client and operates within a context of absolute confidentiality and a strict code of ethics
Our coaching approach is founded on the belief that people can become more effective in their project roles through working with an experienced coach who is also an experienced project manager. Coaching sessions are one-on-one and the coach teaches and directs via encouragement and advice.
What is Project Coaching?
Project coaching takes a coaching approach to helping and developing project management people such as project managers, project sponsors, project directors, and executives who may be interested in or who may be responsible for project management improvement programmes. Coaching interventions are customised to meet individual needs. The focus is on developing the person’s project management skills and knowledge and identifying and changing behaviours that are critical for effective performance.
Why Project Coaching?
Traditional class room training on its own is not an effective way to develop knowledge and skills and change behaviour - generic classroom theories are hard to apply within the realities of most organisations and are quickly forgotten. One-to-one regular coaching is a highly effective management development approach for learning new project management skills and for embedding long term positive behavioural changes. Training combined with follow up coaching, is more effective still. More and more studies are showing that coaching delivers real benefits and provides a significant return on the investment made with many studies reporting average return on investment of several hundred percent.
How does it Work?
The coach uses powerful and probing inquiry techniques to access and stimulate the client’s knowledge and creativity so that they re-evaluate themselves and their performance within work situations. The collaboration is guided by a set of goals that are usually defined in the first session. Because they are project management experts, the project coach has a context for the collaboration that leads to powerful insights and calls to action towards improved performance in project roles.
Coaching sessions are one-on-one and can be face-to-face or via the telephone. Coaching relationships can be short but some last many months or even years. Coaching sessions are scheduled at regular intervals and specific agreed actions are implemented by the client between sessions.
Who Uses Coaching?
Coaching is increasingly popular as a means of promoting learning and development. A 2008 survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) found that almost three-quarters (71%) of UK employers currently use coaching in their organisations, compared to 63% in 2007. A similar proportion of respondents (72%) found coaching to be an effective tool. Surveys from other developed economies indicate similar usage and coaching is fast becoming an essential tool for individual and organisational development.
